A Black Heritage Camp for Adoptive & Foster Families
UMOJA MN Expansion Announcement!
EVOLVE Adoption & Family Services is pleased to announce we have been contracted to fulfill a very generous grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services to assist in the expansion of UMOJA MN, which we will now offer three times a year. UMOJA is a Black Heritage camp created to empower adoptive, kinship and foster families. UMOJA provides a powerful weekend experience for the entire family; including adult learning opportunities, child and youth programming and large group cultural celebrations.
We are the only culture camp of this nature in Minnesota and one of only four nationwide. While only three days in length, it is our hope that this camp will spring board families into a lifelong pursuit of cultural competency, equipped to deal with subtle and overt demonstrations of racism. The grant falls under Permanency Support Services, whose goal is to build coordinated and comprehensive programs to reduce the need for placement changes for children and youth in foster care, adoptive placements and kinship placements.
Through this expansion, our long time employee Alisa Matheson has moved into the Associate Manager role and we have been able to hire a new staff, Arielle Grant, to strengthen and expand this opportunity to more families, children and youth.
We are now able to offer 50 scholarships to MN foster and foster care adoptive families to cover their UMOJA MN costs including meals and lodging.
